Google Duo has an extremely simple and intuitive interface. It offers bare minimum options upon launch, an icon to make a video call and a list of recent contacts. Once a call is made by tapping on a name; options to hang up, mute audio and switch cameras appear on the screen. The app boasts of an industry-first “Knock Knock” feature which lets users preview their callers in real time. The feature works by recording the caller and relaying the video to the called person even before the call is accepted. However, privacy conscious users can disable the feature from Duo’s Settings menu.
Unlike other video calling apps; Google Duo doesn’t support messaging or group video calling. However, it does offer end-to-end encryption to secure video calls. Duo may not be the most feature-packed video calling app out there but it certainly offers an incredibly simple and secure way to connect with people.
