What is a Relational Database?

Many companies need solutions for managing large sets of data. It is beneficial for companies to organize their data in a way that is accessible and easy to manage.

A database is a collection of data that is organized into a specific structure. That structure generally consists of tables, schemas, and reports. Although physical databases do exist, the majority of databases are accessible via computer software Data Management Systems.

A Relational Database is a type of database where you can view information within a database in relation to other fields. This allows the user to quickly separate and compare data by building new tables from existing tables. Organizing your data in an RDM will enable you to quickly and efficiently view and analyze a large amount of data.

Coding and Managing RDM

RDM are created with a unique programming language called Structured Query Language or SQL. SQL is the standard universal language for creating, managing, and utilizing RDM. RDMs are maintained by Data Management Systems or DMS. This software houses the RDM, and controls the way the data is accessed, viewed, and edited.

Organizing RDM

RDM use tables to show the relationships between different sets of data. The tables use columns and rows to display the information. The columns contain a particular value and the rows indicate related values. The related figures are assigned a unique key (called a primary key) to relate the data points to one another.

What are the Advantages of Relational Databases?

Organizing data into RDM has specific advantages. RDM can organize and simplify a large quantity of complex data. Arranging data in this way allows information to be queried without changing the database tables. Additionally, many companies rely on them for security, which is critical when managing company specific information and records.
